What to Do in the First 24 Hours After a Flooded Basement

A flooded basement is stressful, and it's easy to either freeze up or rush into something unsafe. Here's a clear, practical order of operations.

Immediately: Safety First

• Do not enter standing water if there's any chance it's in contact with an active electrical outlet, panel, or plugged-in appliance. If you're unsure, shut off power to the affected area at the breaker before doing anything else — or call an electrician/us if you're not confident doing that safely.
• Watch for slip hazards on wet basement stairs.
• If the flooding is severe or ongoing, call for emergency help immediately rather than trying to handle it entirely alone — every hour water sits adds to the damage.

Within the First Few Hours

• If safe, begin removing standing water — a wet/dry shop vacuum or sump pump can help manage smaller amounts while help is on the way.
• Move valuables, electronics, and anything you can lift off the floor and away from the water.
• Take photos of the damage and water level for insurance purposes, if it's safe to do so.
• Increase airflow (fans, dehumidifiers if you have them, opening windows if weather allows) to start reducing moisture and slow mold risk.

• Get a professional assessment of what actually caused the flooding — this is the step people skip, and it's the one that prevents it from happening again. A flooded basement is almost always a symptom of something specific: a failed sump pump, a foundation crack, an overwhelmed exterior drainage system, or a combination.
• Begin drying out affected materials — carpet, drywall, and insulation that stay wet for more than 24–48 hours are at meaningfully higher risk for mold.
